George Orwell writing in the 1930s created a mythical Wigan Pier but today there is a real one on the banks of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. In fact the Pier is now one of the area’s favourite visitor attractions. The Heritage Centre includes an authentic sample of Lancashire life at start of the 20th century - from school to factory; from home to the coal face. Just down the canal is the Trencherfield Mill which lays claim to the world’s largest working mill steam engine. Wigan Pier Theatre Company tells the story of the Pier and Mill with dramatic performances in a range of settings.
