Probably the most famous and most visited political landmark in the world, Free Derry Corner attracts hundreds of tourists daily. The Free Derry wall was originally the gable wall of a house on the Lecky Road, the heart of the civil rights marches. On 5 January 1969 John ‘Caker’ Casey painted the words "You Are Now Entering Free Derry" on the wall. The wall has now become an internationally recognised symbol of resistance. With repeated attempts of demolition by the British Army, the Bogside residents resisted, and the wall still stands today.
