A2 Dual Carriageway, Narrow Water, Warrenpoint, Co. Down - Northern Ireland, UK
Narrow Water Keep and its accompanying castle are situated on the northern shore of Carlingford Lough at the mouth of the Newry River. The stone keep was built by the Normans under Hugh DeLacy, Earl of Ulster, in 1212 to protect the market town of Newry some 5 miles upriver. The walls are on average 5 feet thick! The Republic of Ireland is just yards away across the river, and the castle gateway was the scene of one of the worst atrocities of NI’s troubles with 18 British soldiers killed there in 1979. The keep is open to the public in the summer months. The castle is now a private residence although its halls are often used for functions such as weddings.
