The West Walls begin with the Double Bastion, featuring the Reverend George Walker Monument and the "Roaring Meg" cannon. The beautiful Grand Parade hosts many trees and historic surroundings. Overlooking St. Eugenes Cathedral, and directly beside St. Columbs Cathedral, the Grand Parade is a marvellous walk to take. Between Royal Bastion and Butcher’s Gate, just inside the Walls, lies the Memorial Hall. This is the headquarters of the Apprentice Boys, named after the thirteen Guild apprentices who closed the Gates against King James’s troops in 1688. This was the symbolic start of the Great Siege of Derry in 1689.
