The workhouse opened in 1840 and operated until 1948 in that capacity. It was continued to be used as a hospital until 1991, and was finally opened as a museum in 1997. The building itself is of great historical and architectural value. However the internal contents and exhibitions add to this; including the Atlantic Memorial exhibition, which deals with the extensive role of the people of this city during the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II.
