On the northern side of the River Tyne, this community would have been one of the most important positions in the Roman conquest of northern Britain. The fort is thought to date from 139AD and the many remains of other buildings that surround it are imagined to be of the same sort of age. The collections of remains are a fascinating place to learn more about the heritage of this region.
