The world’s first railway was the Stockton & Darlington railway of 1825. Its route passed through North Road Station in Darlington, which today has been lovingly restored as the Railway Centre & Museum. The museum is dedicated to the local railway heritage, history, and the people who worked on the railways and building trains in Darlington’s works. The museum’s collection include Locomotion No.1 which ran on the first railway, and the steam locomotive Derwent which was built on the Darlington site. Many other collections include railway and station signage, uniforms and paintings. The museum is open from 10am till 5pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
