The Derwentcote Steel Furnace was constructed in the 1720s and is the earliest and most complete remaining example of a complete steel-making furnace in Britain. In its hey-day, the furnace was an important part of the local economy, providing high-grade steel for springs and cutting tools. The steel furnace is now overseen by English Heritage who are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep at the mill.
