The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle lie on the coast of Northumberland between the fishing village of Craster and Embleton, a dramatic ruin on the skyline. The castle was begun in the early 14th century by the Earl of Lancaster and passed to John of Gaunt in the latter part of that century. He extended the castle and its protective walls considerably and, in its heyday, Dunstanburgh was considered one of the largest and finest castles in the north-east of England.
