Robert Manners began the original structure at Etal Castle in the mid 14th Century, as a defence against the regular raids and attacks that the Scots were launching from the north. Close to the River Tell and a ford, this castle was in a strategically important position. The castle fell to James IV’s invading Scots army in 1513. The castle now has several exhibitions put in place by English Heritage that tell the story of the site and the people that lived here.
