Known by locals as the ‘Blinking Eye Bridge’, due to its appearance when tilting to allow boats to pass under, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge has been labelled a triumph in architectural engineering. It was officially opened by the Queen in 2002. Designed by Wilkinson & Eyre Architects and Gifford & Partners, it allows people who live and work on Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides the chance to walk - or cycle - over the Tyne. It pivots on two enormous ‘hinges’ to allow river traffic to pass under it.
