The Grace Darling Memorial is an ornate memorial to one of Bamburgh’s most famous residents, and is situated within St. Aidan’s churchyard. Grace is a local heorine to Bamburgh and the Farne Islands because she and her father, William, rescued survivors from the shipwrecked SS Forfarshire in 1838, saving the lives of 9 men. Her brave efforts gained national recognition. Countless books and magazine articles were written about her, not to mention numerous poems and paintings being created in her honour.
