This three mile section of Hadrian’s Wall offers some of the best preserved and most typical examples of the Roman remains to be seen along its entire 73 mile length. Starting with Cawfields Milecastle, impressive masonry indicates the gateways that would have allowed trade between Pictland and Roman Britain. Gradually climbing east, passing two further milecastles, the wall reaches its highest point at Winshields Crags (345 metres), with sweeping views of the Northumberland National Park, before descending steeply to Steel Rigg. Car parking at either end.
