Covering some 2,000 hectares, Hamsterley Forest has something for everyone. It is a delightful oasis of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, sprawling along the sides of a sheltered valley, with play and picnic areas, several walks and cycle routes ranging from a 1½ mile easy-access footpath to a 7-mile black cycle route and downhill descent course for the more adventurous. Follow all that exercise with a snack or slice of lovely homemade cake in the tearoom and a browse around the gift shop and visitor centre. There is also a playpark which is now open.
