Harperley POW camp was purpose-built during WW2 to house Italian and German prisoners. The camp consists of 49 huts - the most complete of only a handful of camps left in the country. The purpose-built theatre still remains where prisoners put on shows for local people. Run by a former professional musician, the theatre group and camp orchestra was also helped out by the Salvation Army. One of the jewels of the camp’s history if the survival of 10 wall murals depicting German scenes painted by a homesick prisoner.
