Housesteads Roman Fort is the best preserved Roman fort in Britain, and one of the largest, covering five acres. Sited approximately midway along Hadrian’s Wall, it commands fine views of the Northumbrian countryside. Visitors can see the remains of barrack blocks, the granaries, the hospital, headquarters building and commanding officer’s house. The communal latrine is particularly fascinating as it shows the ingenious sewerage arrangements put in place by the Romans. There is also a museum, displaying finds from the site.
