Sir William Hylton built the original castle around 1400, and this distinctive and highly decorative gatehouse is all that is left of the fine building that he created. Overseen by English Heritage, the property is well preserved throughout and contains interesting royal and family artefacts that were collected through the centuries. The grounds are a fine place to enjoy a walk in this charming countryside.
