Originally opened in 1857, Mowbray Park is an excellent example of how the Victorians constructed ‘green lungs’ in industrialised towns and cities. In 2000, Heritage Lottery cash was secured and the park was brought back to its former glory. New sculptures were added to complement original artwork and the gardens were revamped, resulting in Mowbray Park winning Green Flag awards for excellence. The restoration saw the faithful recreation of many of the park’s lost historic features such as the Victorian Bandstand and Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War.
