This splendid mediaeval castle, built in the mid 14th century on the site of an earlier fortified manor house by the powerful Nevill family, who owned it until the Rising of the North in 1569, has been the home of Lord Barnard’s family since 1626. The site is traditionally that of King Canute’s mansion. The Neville family, descendants of Canute, lived there until the mid-16th century. The unusually built Bulmer’s Tower may be of Danish origin but the bulk of the castle was built in about 1380.
