The East Coast main line is the main railway link between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh, originally belonging to the North Eastern Railway, then the London and North Eastern and, latterly, British Rail. The line crosses th Tweed at Berwick using the majestic Royal Border Bridge. This 28 arch bridge, designed and built by Robert Stephenson, was completed in 1850. When electrified in the early1990s, the overhead supports were designed by the Royal Fine Art Commission to reduce the visual impact.
