This Roman fort was originally built as part of a massive frontier system that the Romans built across the north of England in order to defend the empire from attack. The area around Segedunum, meaning ‘strong fort’, was home to over six hundred Romans for nearly three hundred years. The displays here are made up of a series of fascinating excavations made from the 1970s right through to today.
