Souter Lighthouse once protected shipping from the notorious rocks in the approaches to the rivers Tyne and Wear. Now it offers a safe haven for visitors. You can explore the whole building with its Engine Room and Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage. Take part in hands-on activities about shipwrecks and the workings of the lighthouse, and see coastal creatures in our Rockpool Fishtank. Also, climb to the top of the tower for the fantastic views next to the 4.5-ton light mechanism or stay below and capture the view on closed circuit TV.
