South Shields Museum and Gallery explores a long and fascinating cultural history in this region of the northeast. One of the central exhibitions is dedicated to the life and works of Catherine Cookson, one of the most famous authors in the country, and a great lover of writing tales in South Tyneside. There is also an extensive natural history collection with a range of excavated artefacts on show. The gallery has art of many styles both created by and inspired by local artists.
