Home of the Venerable Bede, the chronicler of the beginnings of Christianity, Jarrow is one of the most important and studied monastic sites of Anglo-Saxon heritage. The oldest dedication stone at the local church offers the date of 685AD, and suggest that the building may well be even older in places. English Heritage is responsible for overseeing this important piece of religious history.
