This railway was originally built in order to move coal from the nearby collieries to the ships that waited on the River Tyne. The oldest part of the tracks is thought to have dated from the late 1600s, having operated in some form or another for more than 300 years when it closed in the 1967. Here the Marley Hill Engine Shed houses a collection of historic engines, rolling stock and other railway artefacts for visitors to browse.
