Washington is a new town in Tyne & Wear, close to both Sunderland and Newcastle. It was developed in 1964 around an existing village. Interestingly, George Washington’s ancestors hailed from this village, and gave him his name and the name of the American Capital City. Today Washington is mainly residential, with good links via the A1 motorway.
