One of my all time favourite places would be the Orkney Isles as it feels a little more like the mainland than the Lerwick and the Shetland Isles, but still has its own distinct character.
The main island on which Kirkwall is situated probably has more history per square metre than pretty much anywhere else in the world, with Medieval churches, pre-historic megalithic tombs right up to playing a significant roll in World War II.
