  Latest Lerwick Review

Many seem to think Lerwick is a wild desolate place mostly populated by sheep and the odd farmer, but those who've been lucky enough to visit will have discovered a very different Lerwick.

There are plenty of shops including chains and lots of museums all around the town, many of which focus on small aspects of the island life both prior and post the oil industry arriving. The Shetland Museum is probably the best of them all (in my opinion at least), but the others are certainly worth popping into too.

The biggest upside and downside to Lerwick (and the rest of the Shetland Isles) is perhaps the weather which tends to change every half hour, but can also be very surprising as I last stayed in November and had a week of sunshine - much better than at home.

The only note of caution is that Lerwick seems to shut down completely on a Sunday which might be a slight surprise to city dwellers used to 24 hour shopping.

There are plenty of hotels in Lerwick with noteable ones including the 4 star The Kveldsro House Hotel and more modern styled 3 star Lerwick Hotel being two of the most popular. Personally I stayed in the Grand Hotel which rather lived up to its name, although isn't star rated.

Looking forward to going back someday.
