The Neolithic village of Skara Brae is one of Orkney’s most visited sites and rightly regarded as one of the most remarkable monuments in Europe. It was inhabited between 3200 BC and 2200 BC, comprising of eight dwellings (including Skaill House) linked together by alleyways. The houses contain stone furniture, hearths and drains and present a remarkable picture of life in Neolithic times. The inhabitants appear to have eaten a lot of shellfish, but burnt grain found on site in 1972-3 suggests the people also grew crops.
