Stromness Museum was founded in 1837 with the creation of the Orkney Natural History Society. The current building dates from 1858 and was built to serve in a dual role as the town hall and also as the town museum. The museum comprises a series of galleries, each with different themes. The lower gallery contains a wealth of fishing related artefacts, whereas the upper gallery is more centred around natural history and the birds of the island group.
