One of Maidstone's oldest buildings, the Archbishop’s Palace was built in the late 14th Century by the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Courtenay. He and other Archbishops used it as their private residence. It's now the Kent Register Office, and open to visitors during the summer on Heritage Open Days, and to groups at other times by prior arrangement. The Apothecary's Garden is tended by the Kent Garden's Trust and open on Wednesday afternoons between May and August.
