Ardingly Reservoir in West Sussex is home to the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) Ardingly Activity Centre that encourages people of all ages to take to the water. The centre was established in the late 1980’s and saw the RYA teaming with the British Canoe Union to teach people how to safely go sailing, canoeing and increasingly windsurfing on the reservoir’s 198 acres. Once sailors have passed the initial tests at Ardingly they will usually progress to open water sailing at Chichester Harbour.

My first go at sailing a dinghy was not the glorious success that I had hoped. After tipping over and getting a soaking, I did, however, get back in the boat and had a wonderful day on the reservoir learning to tack and sail the dinghy. The centre has a number of excellent teachers who are also, extremely usefully, extremely patient too. In the summer the activity centre can get very busy so do book ahead.
