Ashdown Forest is the highlight of East Sussex. It’s a bit like the New Forest, only smaller, but is still has miles and miles of foothpaths and bridleways, many well away from the south-east’s busy roads. Kings’ Standing is a favourite of mine, especially on a sunny day. The woods near Crowborough Warren are interesting and atmospheric. You can see the remains of an old mill here and an old packhorse bridge. The stream flows orange through the area because of all the iron ore, but we all swam in it as children.
