The Ashford Tank is a fantastic piece of WWI memorabilia and is well worth a look if you are in the area, although probably not worth a trip just to see it. During WWI, tanks were a new weapon, and captured public imagination. Cashing in on this, the government authorised a few tanks to tour Britain, using them as a promotional vehicle to sell war bonds. After the war, over two hundred tanks were given to various towns in recognition of their financial contribution to the war. Ashford has the only surviving tank from this number. It is very much part of Ashford’s heritage and we have grown quite fond of it over the years!

For such a peaceful and quiet Kent town as Ashford, visitors can sometimes be taken aback when presented with the image of a World War One tank towards the end of the High Street. This rare example of the first type of battle tank to enter service with the British Army has been in place for over seven decades and it is not going anywhere else soon, such is the love and affection the people of Ashford have for 'their' tank.
