Very much a tourist destination, Battle grew up around Battle Abbey, which was dedicated in 1095. The high altar of the church was said to be built on the spot where King Harold died. Senlac Hill, where the battle of Hastings took place on 14 October 1066, is a popular spot to visit.

The Abbey was amazing, with some interesting interactive displays. The children really enjoyed the Yesterday’s World, which was...   Read full review ] - JackH

I love this slice of old East Sussex, the quaint High Street and the air of history that pervades Battle is almost palpable as you stroll the street. Battle is a small town, with a village feel, but then you have Battle Abbey and the scene of the 1066 Battle after which the town is named. There are some lovely small cafe's and restaurants here and another superb attraction is Yesterday's World, a true step back into yesterday.   - Patrick Boniface
