In 2004 a large area of land at Beacon Hill overlooking Rottingdean was transformed into a Local Nature Reserve, which won a prestigious award the following year. The traditional down land forms a small part of the South Downs National Park and was given over to nature in order to protect the dwindling habitat of the endangered skylark. In the summer months the area is abloom with native grasses that attract huge numbers of butterflies to the reserve.
