On 25 July 1909 Frenchman Louis Bleriot became the first man to fly across the English Channel. To commemorate this achievement on 4 February 1910 a memorial was placed on the spot where the pilot landed within sight of the walls of Dover Castle. Today the site is in a wooded area, but is well signposted and comprises of a granite plane shape placed onto the ground.
