Also known as the ’Royal Pavilion’, Brighton Pavilion was built in 1784 and purchased in the early nineteenth century for the Prince Regent. Between 1815 and 1821 the Pavilion was rebuilt under the direction of the architect John Nash who employed a mixture of classical and Indian styles which have been labelled ’Hindoo-Gothic’. It is a quite unique building and well worth seeing.

After years of including Brighton Pavilion in my novels of the Regency, I was able to pay a visit - and it was everything I hoped for. I had drawn extensively on the published descriptons and found nothing wanting. The tour recording was perfect and it was fascinating to see restoration work in progress. I would have loved to have had a peek at the Regent's bathroom, and wondered if it is currently as described? And I had rather hoped to see one or two characters walking about in Regency costume. Nevertheless, a credit to all. The staff were lovely and very helpful. I looked about outside for a Regency coffee house - somewhere to sit and admire the pavilion itself. Just a thought for the future. There would have been plenty of customers, I think, on the day I visited. The giftshop is top-class - and I bought. I'll be back! - Bill Tibbals
