Henry VIII implemented an enormous defensive building campaign during his reign across southern England, as part of this Camber Castle was a device fort built to protect the huge Rye anchorage. The original stones were laid in 1512, but the majority of the work was completed between 1539 and 1544. By the mid 17th Century the fort was no longer in use and fell into disrepair, and thus only the ruins remain, in the careful hands of English Heritage.
