Canterbury lies on the River Stour. In 597, St Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas Becket was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. Geoffery Chaucer's 14th Century Canterbury Tales is based on pilgrims to the Cathedral. It is the birthplace of Christopher Marlowe. Famous landmarks include the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey, a Norman castle and Roman walls.
