The Catholic Church of St Henry and St Elizabeth is one of Sheerness’s most prominent buildings and also has an interesting history. Designed by Victorian architect Edward Welby Pugin, construction was started in 1863 with much of the work being undertaken by migrant workers, many of whom worked in the nearby Royal Navy base. The church was opened on 14 September 1864 whilst inside the church there is a magnificent Caen stone altar and memorials for those who lost their lives in the explosion of HMS Irene in 1915.
