Chatham Anchor
Dock Road, Brompton, Chatham, Kent ME7 - England, UK
  Share Location Map

For over five hundred years there was a Royal Navy presence in the Medway Towns at Sheerness and also at Chatham Dockyard. To commemorate the link between the Senior Service at the towns of Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham a naval anchor was placed near to the former entrance to the Naval Base soon after the last warship left the base in the mid 1980ís. The site chosen for this memorial is rather appropriately located very close to the Brompton War memorial.

In 1984 the Royal Navy left Chatham Dockyard behind following a series of defence cuts, but after 400 years in the Medway towns it was hard to cut the associations that had been created. As a lasting memorial to those 400 years an anchor, from an unknown, Royal Navy warship was presented to the people of Medway and mounted near to where the main dockyard entrance used to be located at Brompton. Today it is a small remember of something that dominated the lives of thousands of people from Chatham. - Patrick Boniface
