Crampton Tower Museum is housed in one of Broadstairs most unusual buildings. The tower was built by local resident Thomas Russel Crampton, who is chiefly remembered as a designer of Victorian locomotives and railways. The tower that now holds the archive of his work was actually built as a water works to serve the town of Broadstairs. Crampton was also, however, concerned with gas works and the submarine telegraph cable linking Great Britain with France.

When you turn up outside this museum you immediately look up at the round tower half expecting to find it attached to the ramparts of some ancient castle. Sadly no castle here but inside this impressive, yet small, museum there is loads to see and do with many of the exhibits being hands on and interactive. A most enjoyable visit to a most unusual and distinctive building on the outskirts of Broadstairs. - Paul Jamieson
