Dover, the gateway to Europe. It is a somewhat overlooked town in terms of its tourism, but that is sad. We stayed for a week just outside Dover and found plenty to do. Dover has a thriving port, with regular ferry crossings to France which were very reasonable. We went over to Calais for the day, which was great. The town is full of history and there is plenty to see, including a great museum. We had a really interesting visit to Dover Castle and managed a couple of short walks in the area. I recommend the Tourist Information Centre in the town. They were very helpful and gave us a pile of information on what was going on. There is a really nice restaurant, the Allotment, which we visited. Excellent food and the staff were most obliging.
