Edward Carpenter was an English socialist poet who lived in this fine old house i the heart of the seaside town of Hove. In 1893 he became one of the founding members of the Independent Labour Party along with notable author George Bernard Shaw. Carpenter was also an early homosexual activist and there has always been a strong gay community on the south coast particularly around Brighton ever since.
