Built around 1100, this stone castle was one of the earliest fortifications to be built by the Normans after they took England in 1066. The impressive ruin has been restored and is maintained by English Heritage. Standing aloft a full height motte part of the great hall and the main wall is still visible despite the weathering of time and war on the castle. The site is surrounded by charming Kent countryside and is a great place for a walk.
