Folkestone lies in the Shepway District of Kent. It was a fishing village until the 19th Century, but the seafront was continually battered by storms. When the harbour was built, the town developed as a trading port. Defences were constructed during wars with France and smuggling was rife for many years. It is now a popular holiday resort.

  Latest Folkestone Review

In recent years the town has redeveloped itself as a seaside tourist resort with a wide range of boutique and quaint shops and restaurants, particularly around the harbourside. Watch out for the towns unusual one way system, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy to understand.   - James Smith
