A short distance from the main road between Battle and London at Staplecross in East Sussex can be found a large area of natural ancient woodland called Footlands Woods. The area is managed by the Woodlands Trust and is open to the public to enjoy every day of the year. The woods were first established as a natural resource by the Saxons as a hunting ground and later as a wood for growing valuable timber for building work.
