George Jacob Holyoake lived a great deal of his life in this fine house close to the seafront in Brighton, then a beacon of industrial prowess thanks to its great iron structures on the beach front. Holyoake was a great writer and journalist and was extremely outspoken in his secularist beliefs. Applauded by many, Holyoake was not without his critics and remains the last person to have been convicted of blasphemy whilst giving a public lecture.
