The Napoleonic Wars saw a great many defences built around the coastline of Britain, one of the most unique parts of this construction is Dover’s Grand Shaft. The Grand Shaft is essentially a vertical tunnel 140 feet high cut into the chalk of the Western Heights linking the port to the fortifications on the hilltop. Built over three years from 1806 the Grand Shaft is also unique in having a triple staircase arrangement.
